Know Jorethang in Sikkim
Jorethang in Sikkim is a major business centre in the South Sikkim District, on the West Bengal border, 30 km from Darjeeling. The Maghe Mela in Jorethang in South Sikkim is an annual event. It lasts for about three days starting on the 14th of January. The festival attracts village folk from all of South and West District by dint of the right climate. It is celebrated just after all the tasks related to harvesting and replanting winter crops are complete. This is time to celebrate and enjoy. It is also the place which divides Sikkim with West Bengal.
Journey to Jorethang (Sikkim)
Airport : The nearest airport is at Bagdogra, West Bengal, about 124 km from Gangtok.
Railhead : New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in West Bengal is the closest railhead, which is 125 km from Gangtok. Road Transport : There are SNT buses to Pelling, Gangtok, Yuksom, Jorethang, Tashiding, Darjeeling and Siliguri. To get to Kalimpong you first take a bus to Teesta Bazaar or Meli Bazaar and then get another bus from there. The place is linked by buses to Yuksom (3 hours), Legship (1 hour) and Gezing (2 1/2 hours).
There are many shared jeeps to Pelling and to Gangtok via Jorethang or Rablonga. Gezing is close to Pelling in Sikkim.
Staying in Jorethang (Sikkim)
There are only a couple of hotels managed by Sikkim tourism. However at nearby Pelling, the range is better and other than the hotels managed by the tourism department there are private hotels too.
Very few places in the world can offer as many varieties of adventure tourism packages as Sikkim. World's third highest peak Kanchanzonga is located in Sikkim. It is the land of peace and tranquility.
For Trekking is the best way to get to interesting and remote mountain villages of Sikkim and to enjoy views of the famous peaks together with their lifestyle untouched with modern civilization.
The river rafting,which is known as "White Water Adventure" represents another major attractions. Within distance of 100 miles, one can see the topographical variations with the rivers rising from the higher points and then dropping dramatically to lower levels the plains bordering west Bengal. For those who wish to view wildlife, South Sikkim offers Wildlife Sancuary in Maenam.
